State parks (Red Rock, Valley of Fire) need state filming permits. Private property (resorts, restaurants, private homes) needs the owner's written permission and a COI on file.

What's the best desert location near Las Vegas?

Red Rock Canyon for accessibility and dramatic sandstone, 25 minutes from the Strip. Valley of Fire for hero shots, deep red rock that photographs almost surreal, 60 minutes northeast. Calico Basin for a quieter Red Rock alternative without the crowds. Both need state/federal filming permits if you're using crew, lighting, or tripods. Always shoot at golden hour or blue hour; midday sun flattens everything.

Which Strip resorts allow filming?

All of them, but with strict permitting and COI requirements. MGM Resorts (Aria, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Cosmopolitan, Mandalay Bay) coordinate through their film and entertainment office. Wynn / Encore through their own team. Caesars properties through their corporate communications. Expect 2-6 weeks of lead time, location fees ($500-$5,000+), and a Wynn / MGM / Caesars handler on set. The COI requirement is $1-2M general liability minimum.

What about boutique downtown venues?

Downtown Las Vegas (Fremont East, Arts District) is more shoot-friendly than the Strip. Boutique hotels like Circa, Plaza, and several Arts District galleries / restaurants license filming for $200-$1,000 per day with relatively quick approval. Sandbar at the Drey, Esther's Kitchen, Velveteen Rabbit, all photogenic and approachable. Fremont Street Experience itself needs Fremont Street Experience LLC permission.

Best venues for cinematic conference and event coverage?

Wynn Convention Center has the cleanest neutral lighting and most modern A/V infrastructure of the Strip conference spaces. Caesars Forum has flexible large-room configurations. Cosmopolitan Ballrooms have a more design-forward look. Off-Strip: Las Vegas Convention Center is functional but uglier on camera. Mandalay Bay Convention Center has decent natural light through the lobby atrium for B-roll.

Are there sound stages or studio spaces in Las Vegas?

Yes, though smaller than LA. Studio West Las Vegas, KGS Films, and a handful of private cyc / green-screen studios serve commercial production. Day rates run $800-$2,500. For longer projects, some Vegas production companies rent out their offices as set space. For corporate interviews and product shots, most pros bring portable lighting and shoot in-office rather than rent studio time.

Where can I shoot at dawn / sunrise outdoors?

Red Rock scenic loop opens at dawn, perfect for sunrise hero shots, no permit needed for non-commercial small crew. Valley of Fire opens at sunrise as well. Sunrise Mountain (east valley) gives you a strip backdrop with the valley lit from behind. Floyd Lamb Park doesn't open until 8am, too late for true sunrise. Always check NPS / state park opening times before scheduling a sunrise call.

Las Vegas is a strange filming city. The Strip looks brutal on camera. The desert is the opposite, ordinary from the freeway, world-class on a cinema camera. Downtown sits in between. The working location guide we'd hand a creative director new to shooting in Las Vegas: where actually works, where to skip, and what each venue requires.

Desert & outdoor

Red Rock Canyon NCA. 25 min from the Strip. Iconic red sandstone, mountain backdrops. Scenic Loop opens at dawn. Permit required for crew + tripod + lighting. Best for: hero brand films, lifestyle B-roll, wedding ceremonies, drone reveals.
Valley of Fire State Park. 60 min northeast. Otherworldly red rock formations, almost Martian. Permit required. Best for: hero shots, narrative scenes, cinematic establishing.
Calico Basin. Less crowded Red Rock alternative. Easier permitting than the main NCA. Great for early-morning sunrise without weekend traffic.
Lake Las Vegas. Mediterranean-style village + water. Photogenic for hospitality, lifestyle, wedding. Private community, coordinate with their film office.
Floyd Lamb Park. Green oasis (rare in Vegas). Wedding-friendly, lake, mature trees. Opens at 8am, too late for sunrise.

Bellagio. Iconic but heavily booked. Conservatory and Fountains are protected, needs specific authorization.

MGM Grand / Mandalay Bay. Large footprints, predictable approvals.

Downtown & Arts District

More shoot-friendly than the Strip. Faster approvals, smaller fees, more creative latitude:

Circa & Plaza Hotel. Downtown boutique with rooftop pool (Stadium Swim) and big-format LED. Cinematic city skyline B-roll.
The Drey Hotel. Boutique hospitality with rooftop. Filming-friendly when booked through their team.
Esther's Kitchen. Arts District restaurant with photogenic interiors. Negotiable for non-disruptive coverage off-hours.
Velveteen Rabbit. Cocktail bar with strong design, works for lifestyle and hospitality content.
The Smith Center. Iconic Symphony Park architecture. Highly photogenic exterior.
Fremont Street. Iconic but signage-heavy. Filming under the canopy requires Fremont Street Experience LLC sign-off.

Conference & event spaces

Clark County film permit: Required for filming in public spaces (parks, streets, government buildings). $50-$300 + insurance. 3-5 day processing.
State park permit (Red Rock NCA / Valley of Fire): Required for crew + tripod + lighting. $50-$500 per day. 2-4 weeks lead time.
Strip resort filming: Direct with property film office. $500-$5,000+ per day plus security/handler costs. 2-6 weeks lead time.
COI requirements: $1-2M general liability minimum. Some venues require additional drone-specific endorsement.

Always factor permitting into the production schedule. A great location with sloppy permitting is more expensive than a good one with clean approvals.
