# Las Vegas Monsoon Season: What Roofers and Contractors Should Plan For

By [Charles Andrulis](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/about) · Picture Perfect Video · October 22, 2026

Las Vegas is the driest major metro in the continental United States, until summer thunderstorms start building over the mountains around the valley. Monsoon storms bring gusty winds, lightning and bursts of heavy rain that send water down dry washes. For a roofer that means crews on exposed roofs, materials that can blow away, flooded streets between jobs and a wave of calls after each storm. This guide covers when the season runs, what each weather alert means for a crew, the OSHA lightning rules, flash flood safety and how to turn the season into honest marketing.

The short version: plan the season in spring, stop at the first thunder, and market with proof.

## The short answer

Monsoon moisture usually reaches Las Vegas in July and August and fades in September, says the National Weather Service. Storms bring gusty winds, lightning and flash flooding. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning means wind of 58 mph or higher or hail of 1 inch or larger. OSHA lists roofing as higher risk for lightning: leave the roof at the first thunder and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder. After a storm, hire only a licensed roofer.

## When is monsoon season in Las Vegas?

The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas says that in the warm season, typically July and August, monsoon moisture moves into the Mojave Desert, bringing higher humidity and scattered thunderstorms that usually form over the mountains and then move into the valley. By September the monsoon typically wanes. NWS Tucson uses June 15 to September 30 as the season window for the desert Southwest, and the Clark County Regional Flood Control District calls July through September the summer monsoon months. For a roofer, that means planning for storm risk from mid June to the end of September, with the busiest stretch in the hottest months.

What monsoon storms mean on a roofHazard| What it means for a roofing crew
---|---
Gusty winds| NWS Las Vegas says storm winds occasionally cause damage. Loose underlayment, tiles and bundles can become debris, so secure materials before storms build.
Heavy rain| Often the main impact. An open roof deck needs a dry in plan before the storm, not after the first drops.
Flash flooding| Water sweeps down normally dry washes, even on sunny days. Routes between jobs can flood fast.
Lightning| A roof is one of the most exposed places to be. Stop work at the first thunder.
Timing| Schedule exposed work early in the day and keep a backup day in summer bids.

## Weather alerts, decoded for a roof crew

Only the National Weather Service issues weather watches and warnings. The severe thunderstorm definition is national; wind advisories and warnings use criteria set by each local NWS office.

Weather alerts a Las Vegas roofer should knowAlert| What it means| Crew response
---|---|---
Severe Thunderstorm Watch| Severe storms are possible in and near the watch area| Secure loose materials, plan a dry in and pick the shelter
Severe Thunderstorm Warning| Wind 58 mph or higher or hail 1 inch or larger is happening or imminent| Get off the roof and into a sturdy building away from windows
Wind Advisory| Strong winds, below High Wind Warning level| Secure objects outdoors; rethink sheet goods and ladder work
High Wind Warning| Sustained strong winds with stronger gusts| Stop roof work and seek shelter; drive slowly
Flash Flood Watch| A flood is possible in your area| Plan routes that avoid washes and low crossings
Flash Flood Warning| A flood is happening or will very soon| Stay on high ground; never drive through flooded roads or around barricades

Turn on weather alerts on every foreman's phone and check the NWS Las Vegas forecast at weather.gov/vef before the crew leaves the yard, then again before lunch.

## Lightning on the roof: what OSHA expects

The OSHA and NOAA fact sheet Lightning Safety When Working Outdoors names roofing and construction among the activities at higher risk. Its rule is simple: when thunder roars, go indoors. Here is how it turns into a company plan.

  1. Check the forecast. Check NOAA forecasts and consider rescheduling outdoor work when hazardous weather is expected.
  2. Write it down. Keep a written emergency action plan with a lightning protocol: how workers are warned, where the shelters are, how long it takes to reach them, and when work stops and resumes.
  3. Train every crew. Workers should know the shelter on each job and how long it takes to get there.
  4. Do not start what you cannot stop. When clouds darken and wind picks up, do not tear off a section you cannot dry in quickly.
  5. Go at the first thunder. Leave rooftops, ladders, scaffolds and large equipment. Sheds, tents and covered porches are not safe. Use a fully enclosed building, or a hard topped metal vehicle with the windows up.
  6. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder. The fact sheet notes that workers often go back out too soon.

The fact sheet also notes that OSHA prohibits work on or from scaffolds, crane hoists and work on top of walls during storms or high winds. Monsoon season is extreme heat season too, so pair this with the plan in our guide to [Nevada's heat illness rule for Las Vegas contractors](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/nevada-heat-rule-las-vegas-contractors).

## Before the season: a roof and job site checklist

Pre season checklist for Las Vegas roofersArea| What to check
---|---
Customer roofs| Drains, scuppers and gutters clear on flat and low slope roofs, so a sudden downpour has somewhere to go
Flashing and penetrations| Seals around vents, skylights and AC curbs
Tile and shingle roofs| Slipped, cracked or loose pieces that gusty winds can lift
Active job sites| Bundles, tarps and trash secured at the end of every day
Crew trucks| Tarps and tie downs in every truck, so a crew can dry in fast
Records| Dated photos and video of each roof you inspect or finish

Stormwater is part of the job site plan too. Construction site owners and operators must comply with stormwater permits and regulations, and the Flood Control District offers a free Stormwater Training for Construction Contractors. The fall 2026 class is Monday, November 16, 2026, at the Clark County Building Department, 4701 W. Russell Rd., in a morning or afternoon session. Registration is on the District website.

## Flash floods and crews on the road

Most rainstorms only last a couple of hours, according to the Flood Control District, so waiting them out is usually the safest plan. Share these District facts with every crew:

  * Six inches of water can make you lose control of a vehicle, and one foot of water can float most cars.
  * Nearly half of flood related deaths happen in cars, trucks or SUVs.
  * Flood water can move up to 30 mph and carries chemicals, oil and debris.
  * Driving around barricades is illegal and dangerous; the road underneath may be gone.
  * Washes, channels, detention basins and storm drains are no place to park or stand, even when it is dry.

If a crew is caught out, pull over somewhere higher than the street and wait.

## After the storm: licenses, permits and door knockers

After a July 2013 weekend of heavy rain and wind in Southern Nevada, the Nevada State Contractors Board warned homeowners about unlicensed contractors going door to door to fix leaky roofs, water damage and fallen fences, often with high pressure sales and cash demands. The Board also tells homeowners to check that a contractor holds the right classification: a landscaper should not be bidding a roof.

  * Homeowners: the Board suggests an emergency list of up to three licensed contractors, such as a roofer, electrician and HVAC company, with name, phone and license number. See [how to check a Las Vegas roofer's license](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/las-vegas-roofer-license-check).
  * Roofers: put your license number on every estimate, truck and video.
  * Permits: Clark County requires a permit to construct, alter or repair a building unless the work is on the exemption list in its Building Administrative Code. Check with the county, or the city building department inside a city, before a storm repair.
  * Report unlicensed work to the NSCB hotline at (702) 486-1160.

## Marketing a roofing company through monsoon season

Trust matters most right after a storm. The roofers who win are the ones a homeowner already recognizes from videos of real work, a real crew and a real license number. Film before the season, not in the busiest week of the year.

A monsoon season content plan for a Las Vegas rooferWhen| Video idea
---|---
April to early June| A 30 second roof walk showing clear drains, sealed flashing and secured tiles
Mid June| The owner holding the license card, with the NSCB lookup on a phone
July and August| A crew calling the job at the first thunder and coming back after the storm
After a storm| Dated before and after clips of a dry in and repair, with the homeowner's permission
September| A season recap and an offer to book a fall inspection

## Common questions

### When is monsoon season in Las Vegas?

NWS Las Vegas says monsoon moisture typically arrives in July and August and wanes by September. NWS Tucson uses June 15 to September 30 as the season window for the desert Southwest.

### What does a Severe Thunderstorm Warning mean for a roofing crew?

It means a storm with wind of 58 mph or higher or hail of 1 inch or larger is happening or about to happen in the warning area. The crew should get off the roof and into a sturdy building away from windows.

### How long should roofers wait after thunder before going back on the roof?

OSHA and NOAA say to stay in a safe building or hard topped vehicle for at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder. If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike.

### Do I need a licensed contractor for storm damage roof repairs in Las Vegas?

Yes. Nevada requires contractors to be licensed, and the Nevada State Contractors Board warns homeowners about unlicensed crews going door to door after heavy rain and wind. Check the license and its classification on the NSCB website or app before you sign.

### How should a roofing company market during monsoon season?

Film before the season, not during it. Short videos of real roof checks, your license, a crew stopping for lightning and dated before and after repairs build trust before homeowners need you. Picture Perfect Video films Las Vegas roofers and turns one day into a month of posts.
