# AI Video vs Traditional Video Production: When to Use Each

By [Charles Andrulis](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/about) · Picture Perfect Video · October 3, 2026

We film real productions for hotels, restaurants, venues and contractors, and we also make AI generated concept films. Clients now ask which one they need. The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the best results usually come from knowing where each one fits.

AI generated concept frame from our [AI Concepts](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/work?filter=ai) collection. It is not real client footage, and we label it that way everywhere it appears.

## The short answer

Use AI generated video for ideas, concepts, pitches, mood pieces and shots that would be impossible or unreasonable to film. Use a filmed production for anything that shows your real people, your real location, your real product or real results. For most brands the strongest plan is a hybrid: real footage as the foundation, with clearly labeled AI pieces where they add something a camera cannot.

## What AI video does well

  * Concepts before you spend on a shoot. A few short AI clips can show a client or a team what a campaign could feel like before anyone books a crew, a location or talent.
  * Shots a camera cannot reasonably get. Stylized worlds, impossible camera moves and scenes that would need a large set build can be explored quickly.
  * Volume for testing. When the goal is to compare several creative directions for an ad, AI makes it practical to rough out more options.
  * Storyboards and previsualization. AI frames are a fast way to plan a real shoot, so the production day runs tighter.

## Where AI video still falls short

These limits come from our own work generating concept films with tools such as Seedance and GPT image models.

  * Exact text and logos. Specific words, brand names, prices and logos often come out misspelled or change from frame to frame. Anything that must be exact belongs in real footage or in graphics added during editing.
  * Your actual business. AI cannot show your real crew, your real dining room or a project you actually finished. Presenting generated people or places as real ones misleads viewers.
  * Consistency across shots. Keeping the same person, product or uniform identical through a full sequence is still hard, and small changes are noticeable.
  * Length. Generations are short. Our AI concept clips run about five seconds each, so longer pieces are edited together from many generations.
  * Proof. Testimonials, before and after results and case studies only work when they are real. AI cannot supply proof.

## Side by side

Which approach fits the jobNeed| AI generated video| Filmed production
---|---|---
Pitch a campaign idea| Strong fit| Usually more than you need
Show your team, venue or finished work| Not appropriate| Strong fit
Customer testimonial| Not appropriate| Strong fit
Exact product, menu or logo on screen| Unreliable| Strong fit
Stylized or impossible scene| Strong fit| Possible, often costly
Event coverage| Not possible| Strong fit
Rough ad concepts for testing| Strong fit| Slower

## What each one costs

Filmed production has a predictable cost structure: crew time, equipment, locations and editing. Our published rates are on the [pricing page](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/pricing): brand films from $6,500 to $20,000, event coverage from $1,500 to $3,500 per day, combined photo and video days from $2,800 to $5,500, and monthly content retainers from $4,000 to $12,000.

AI video looks cheap because the software subscription is cheap. The real cost is direction and iteration: writing precise prompts, generating many versions, rejecting the ones with errors, and editing the usable clips into something coherent. That is why we quote AI concept work after a short call. The number of iterations a piece needs drives the price far more than the tool does.

## Labeling rules you need to follow

The major platforms require disclosure when AI is used to make realistic content:

  * YouTube began requiring creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content on March 18, 2024. That covers content a viewer could mistake for a real person, place or event. Clearly unrealistic content, color correction and beauty filters do not need the label.
  * Meta (Facebook and Instagram) announced in February 2024 that users must disclose when they post photorealistic video or realistic sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and that it may penalize accounts that do not.
  * TikTok requires clear labeling when AI or editing is used to realistically depict people or scenes.

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission rule on fake reviews, in effect since October 2024, bans testimonials that claim to come from someone who does not exist. An AI generated "customer" praising your business is exactly what that rule targets.

Our practice is simple: every AI piece we publish says "AI generated" on the piece itself and in its title, including everything in our [AI Concepts](https://pictureperfectvideo.com/work?filter=ai) portfolio.

## Who owns AI generated video

In its January 29, 2025 report on copyrightability, the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone do not give a person enough control over the output to make it protectable. Human contributions can still be protected, including human made material that remains visible in the result, the creative selection and arrangement of material, and human modifications to AI output.

In practice, a brand film built on real footage you commissioned is a much stronger asset to own than a purely generated clip. If ownership matters for a campaign, plan for meaningful human authorship and talk to an attorney. This is general information, not legal advice.

## A hybrid workflow that works

  1. Concept with AI. Generate a handful of labeled concept frames or clips to agree on tone, color and pacing.
  2. Shoot the real story. Film your people, place, product and proof with a crew.
  3. Add AI only where it earns its place. A stylized opener or an impossible transition, clearly labeled.
  4. Finish with human editing. Text, logos and prices go in as graphics so they are exact.

## Common questions

### Is AI generated video good enough for business marketing?

For concepts, pitches, mood pieces and stylized shots, often yes. For anything that shows your real team, location, product or results, use filmed footage, because AI cannot show what actually exists and presenting generated scenes as real misleads customers.

### Is AI video cheaper than hiring a video crew?

The tools are inexpensive, but usable results take direction, many iterations and editing. Simple concept pieces can cost less than a shoot, while polished AI pieces can take longer than expected. Filmed production is easier to budget because crew time and deliverables are defined up front.

### Do I have to label AI generated video?

On the major platforms, yes for realistic content. YouTube, Meta and TikTok all require disclosure when AI is used to realistically depict people, places or events. Labeling also protects trust with your audience.

### Can I use AI people in a testimonial?

No. The FTC rule on fake reviews, in effect since October 2024, bans testimonials that claim to come from someone who does not exist. Testimonials should come from real customers, filmed or quoted with their permission.

### Does Picture Perfect Video make AI generated video?

Yes. We make AI concept films and stills, and every piece is labeled AI generated. You can see examples in the AI Concepts section of our portfolio. Most clients use them alongside real productions rather than instead of them.
